Maria S. Elsden Unanimously Appointed Town Attorney for the Town of Enfield

The Town of Enfield has appointed Maria S. Elsden as its new Town Attorney.  She officially assumed her responsibilities on January 7, 2019.  Maria has been the Acting Town Attorney since September 2018 when her predecessor, Attorney Christopher W. Bromson was appointed Town Manager.

Town Manager Christopher W. Bromson has worked with Elsden since hiring her in 1990 as an Assistant Town Attorney.  “I couldn’t be happier for Maria and for the Town,” said Bromson. “She’s a solid municipal attorney and has consistently distinguished herself as a hard worker and straight-shooter. When I hired Maria after her judicial clerkship, I didn’t expect that we would be still be working together almost 30 years later, I as Town Manager and she as Town Attorney. With her expanded role, she’s a great addition to the Enfield team.”

Maria has worked in the Town Attorney’s Office as both Assistant and Sr. Assistant Town Attorney handling a full range of municipal and administrative issues and cases. She is pleased about her expanded duties as Town Attorney. “I’ve always loved my job as a staff attorney representing the Town of Enfield and, while I didn’t aspire to the top role, I’m excited about it. Chris and I have always worked together effectively and having the support of Mayor Ludwick and the Town Council has been crucial.”

Mayor Ludwick said that while there was no template for hiring from within for the Council-appointed Charter position, it made sense in this case. “Maria didn’t hesitate to step up.  She has the necessary municipal legal experience as well as the bonus of institutional memory.  She’s done a great job as Acting Town Attorney and this appointment makes for a seamless transition.”

Maria is a graduate of Western New England College, School of Law where she was a member of the Law Review.  She is a prior member of the American Institute of Certified Planners and former board member of the Connecticut Association of Municipal Attorneys.
