Street Numbers Required

This notice is to make you aware that all buildings are required to conform to the town ordinance for the display of street numbers. Without proper numbers it is difficult for emergency personnel to locate your house, business, or apartment in case of an emergency. These few seconds of delay could mean the difference to a family member or loved one in a time of need.

Below is a set of requirements established by the Enfield Code of Ordinances, section 4-43. Please review these requirements and install the proper number on your residence or business.

1.     Number shall be at least three inches in height and contrast in color from the building. (Please use Arabic numerals rather than cursive letters. For example, "186" is easier to read quickly in an emergency at night than "One Hundred Eighty-Six.")

2.     The number shall be visible from the street to which it relates. (If no door faces the street, see item 3 below, also place the number on the side of the building facing the street at about a mid-door height.)

3.     It shall be affixed either at the top or to the side of the most main entrance of the building facing that street. (This does not mean the door you use most often, but rather the front-most door. Do not put numbers on the door itself or on the riser under the door as the numbers cannot be seen when the door is open or there is snow on the steps. Also, numbers on breezeways and garages do not satisfy the ordinance.)

4.     If the house is more than 100 feet from the road, an additional like number shall be displayed on either a mailbox, post or fence along the street line, clearly identifying the property. If affixed to a mail box such number shall be placed on both sides of said box. (The number on the fence or mailbox should also be three inches in height and of contrasting color.)

5.     For apartments, condominiums, industrial and commercial buildings, each principal building shall bear the number assigned the frontage on which the front entrance is located. In case a principal building is occupied by more than one business or dwelling unit, each separate front entrance of such principal building shall bear a separate number or letter. (For example- 186A, 186B, 186C, etc.)

Failure to make the proper adjustments to your street number display could result in a fine of $25.00 per day.  Thank you in advance for your participation in making Enfield a safer place in which to live and work.
