Accessibility Policy

The Town of Enfield follows the State of Connecticut Web Site Accessibility Policy.  Information and services on the Town of Enfield Web Site are designed to be accessible to people with disabilities. It is the responsibility of the web page developers to become familiar with the guidelines for achieving universal accessibility and to apply these principles in designing and creating pages for the Town of Enfield web site.

According to the latest statistics available from the Bureau of the Census, there are 9.7 million people in the United States who have difficulty seeing the words and letters in ordinary newsprint, equal to 5.0% of the total population. Another 10.9 million people, or nearly 6% of the total population, have difficulty hearing what is said in an ordinary conversation with another person. In 1995, Connecticut had an estimated 35,000 people who were legally blind, and twice that number who were visually impaired. Additionally, there are estimated to be 25,000 people who are profoundly deaf and 175,000 people who are hard of hearing in Connecticut.

The site is compliant with all priority one requirements, as well as most priority two requirements, as set forth in the W3C's recommendations for web content accessibility guidelines. The site, therefore, complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act in that it is navigable and viewable by non-graphical, text-only browsers. Although there are a large number of .pdf documents on this site, they are accessible in a text-only format by using Adobe Acrobat's free .pdf converter tool located at http://access.adobe.com/simple_form.html. Simply enter the url address of the .pdf you'd like to convert to a text-only format, and the Adobe Converter will do the rest.

The use of this policy will ensure that web pages created for the Town of Enfield are developed to serve the largest possible audience. Compliance with this policy provides an added benefit to those users with text-based browsers, low-end processors, slow modem connections and/or no multimedia capabilities on their computer.
