ENFIELD TOWN COUNCIL MINUTES OF A SPECIAL MEETING JANUARY 24, 2005

ROLL-CALL - Present were Councilmen Edgar, Egan, Fiore, Kaupin, Mangini, Peruta, Reveruzzi, Tait and Tallarita. Councilman Crowley arrived at 7:04 p.m. Also present were Town Manager Scott Shanley, Assistant Town Manager Daniel Vindigni, Town Clerk Suzanne Olechnicki.
DISCUSSION RE: APPOINTMENT OF SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER
Mayor Tallarita explained that applications were solicited for this vacancy and three were received. Democratic members of the council and board of education met with the applicants to give them a chance to discuss themselves, their goals for the school board and why they wanted to be a member. There was also a question and answer session with the candidates.
NOMINATION #7576 by Councilman Fiore, seconded by Councilman Mangini to appoint Samuel McGill Jr. as a member to the Board of Education for a term which expires 11/22/2005.
Councilman Fiore noted that Mr. McGill is a very qualified person to hold this position. He is an alternate member on the Planning & Zoning Commission, chairman of the Fair Rent Commission, former vice-chairman of the Senior Center Building Committee, and is familiar with the Enfield school system.
MOTION #7577 by Councilman Tait, seconded by Councilman Kaupin to close nominations.
Upon a SHOW-OF-HANDS vote being taken, the Chair declared MOTION #7577 adopted 10-0-0.
Councilman Reveruzzi spoke about all the applicants and what good, qualified candidates they were and that this was a difficult decision. He expressed his hope that the applicants would maintain an interest in local government and the school system. He thanked everyone for their interest.
Councilman Kaupin thanked the caucus for giving updates on the process along with the intended nomination. He spoke about the work Mr. McGill did on the Senior Center Building Committee and how well the committee worked together. He stated he supports the nomination and wishes him luck.
Councilman Egan praised Mr. McGill's leadership on the Senior Center Building Committee and how those attributes would be as valuable to the Board of Education.
Councilman Crowley noted that the caucus members were impressed with all the candidates.
Mayor Tallarita spoke about the talents of all the applicants and how they can all be of help to the board. He also encouraged them to not wait for a vacancy, but to remember the July nominating convention. He urged them to stay involved as they always need new people with new ideas and perspectives.
Upon a ROLL-CALL vote being taken, the Chair declared Samuel McGill appointed to the Board of Education by a 10-0-0 vote.
MOTION #7578 by Councilman Fiore, seconded by Councilman Mangini to go into Executive Session to discuss Pending Litigation and Real Estate Negotiations.
Upon a SHOW-OF-HANDS vote being taken, the Chair declared MOTION #7578 adopted 10-0-0 and the meeting stood recessed at 7:14 p.m.
EXECUTIVE SESSION
The Executive Session of the Enfield Town Council was called to order by Chairman Tallarita at 7:23 p.m.
ROLL-CALL - Present were Councilmen Crowley, Edgar, Egan, Fiore, Kaupin, Mangini, Peruta, Reveruzzi, Tait and Tallarita. Also present were Town Manager Scott Shanley, Assistant Town Manager Daniel Vindigni, Town Clerk Suzanne Olechnicki.
Pending Litigation and Real Estate Negotiations were discussed with no action or votes being taken.
Chairman Tallarita adjourned the Executive Session at 7:52 p.m. He reconvened the Special Meeting at 7:53 p.m. and stated that during Executive Session they discussed Pending Litigation and Real Estate Negotiations with no action or votes being taken.
ADJOURNMENT
MOTION #7579 by Councilman Tait, seconded by Councilman Mangini to adjourn.
Upon a SHOW-OF-HANDS vote being taken, the Chair declared MOTION #7579 adopted 10-0-0 and the meeting stood adjourned at 7:54 p.m.
