POSITION VACANCY

OPERATOR - WATER POLLUTION CONTROL

Ø   CLOSING DATE:  WEDNESDAY, JUNE 30, 2004

Ø   RATE OF PAY:  $19.71/hr

Ø   EXPERIENCE & TRAINING:  High school graduation or equivalent.  Successful completion of the California State University’s Sacramento Operation of Waste Water Treatment Plants Volume I and II, DEP Grade 1 license within one year of appointment, valid State of Connecticut commercial driver’s license with air brake and tanker endorsement.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Duties involve the performing of a variety of routine laboring tasks in and around the sewage treatment plant and pump stations.  Does related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the immediate supervision of the Lead Attendant II , Operations and Maintenance or Lead Attendant I who issue specific instructions covering tasks to be done and who check work periodically to see that tasks are completed in accordance with instructions.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Regular and punctual attendance; operates truck and other mechanical equipment; does grounds maintenance work such as shoveling, plowing snow, mowing and trimming lawns and cleaning grounds; performs water pollution control operations/maintenance; performs tank and channel maintenance work including all painting involved; does all housekeeping tasks and performs minor maintenance and repair work as directed.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS: Performs related work as required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms.  The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; and use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls, talk and hear.  The employee is frequently required to stand and walk.  The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

The employee may frequently lift and/or move in excess of 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions.  The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.  The employee occasionally works in high precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and risk of electrical shock and vibration.  The employee is frequently exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, raw and treated sewage.  The employee occasionally works in confined spaces.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately loud.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY: Ability to use and maintain simple tools and light-powered equipment usual to a sewage treatment plant, including sewer rod machines; ability to understand and follow simple oral instructions.  Ability to operate WPC motor vehicles.  Excellent mechanical, electrical and math skills.  Knowledge of federal and state Water Pollution Control regulations.

PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES:  Ability to work under unpleasant working conditions; dependability; sufficient physical strength and stamina necessary to successfully perform the duties required of the position.  Flexible attitude, self-starter, safety conscious.
