[ARCHIVED] Enfield Senior Center Weekly Column - January 30, 2017

Enfield Senior Center

299 Elm Street, Enfield, CT  06082

News Release for the Week January 30, 2017

Singing is healthy. It is true! Singing makes you feel happier and lowers your stress level. Because you take bigger, slower breaths when you belt out a tune, it has the same effects as yoga. If you would like to join the Enfield Senior Center choral group, the Goldtones, just drop in on Thursdays at 10 a.m. The Goldtones are a welcoming and joyful group of singers.

Every Wednesday in February, we are fortunate to have a wonderfully patient high school volunteer from 4 to 5 p.m. to help with any technology questions. Bring your cell phone, laptop or device and Abdullah will help you with any questions you have.

Once a month we have Pizza Movie Night. This month we are showing the movie “Sully” on Thursday, February 16. The pizza is served at 5 p.m. and the movie begins at 6 p.m. Please purchase your tickets in advance. The cost is $5 for pizza and the movie.

Drop in for a cup of coffee or tea and English muffins or toast prepared to order. We even serve flavored coffee. Have a nice hot cup of coffee on a cold day. Morning Toast is open from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Monday through Friday.

Memory loss is not something you just have to accept. Come and learn about a variety of ways to improve your memory with Bay Path Occupational Therapy students. This workshop will include topics related to brain and memory health such as food selection, memory games, brain training and much more. Join us on Wednesdays from 9 to 10 a.m. through March.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, the Enfield Senior Center is hosting “Memories of Patsy”, The Patsy Cline Tribute Show. “Memories of Patsy” recreates the experience of seeing the legendary singer live in concert. The performance includes over two dozen of Patsy Cline’s songs including, “Crazy,” “Walkin’ After Midnight,” “I Fall to Pieces” and more. Tickets are on sale for the Friday, February 10, 6 p.m. performance for $7 per person. I expect this to be a sell out, so you may want to get your tickets early.

If you are interested in tracing your roots, register for our Free Genealogy Series. Beginning Thursday, February 2 from 2 to 3 p.m. for three sessions. The first session is Getting Started in Genealogy. The next session on Thursday, February 9 will cover DNA & Your Family Tree. On Thursday, February 16 find out about Using Online Genealogy Resources. Please register by calling the Senior Center office. The Genealogy Series is sponsored by Aetna.

Allied’s Attic brought a van to the Senior Center last week and we filled it up with donations. They will bring the van back to the Senior Center parking lot on Wednesday, February 15 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Drop off your old clothes, coats, scarves, gift items…anything really. This is a great opportunity to de-clutter. And it couldn’t be easier.
